Darkest Dungeons Assignment

 Darkest Dungeons II

Custom Character Assignment (Mohammed)

Task 1

Darkest Dungeon II is a gothic RPG game developed by Red Hook Games and was released on October 26th 2021 which has been released only on Epic Games. It is a sequel to it's successful predecessor, Darkest Dungeons, which was released on January 19th 2016. To give a summary on what the game is about, the player who's not integrated in the game, has to lead a band of characters who are called named "Heroes" through a dungeon. Along the way the band of Heroes will find quests to complete and a lot of fights to finish as, they journey through their treacherous path.

The 2nd game, Darkest Dungeon II has 9 characters to choose to form a band, instead of the usual 17 in the first game. For this assignment, I've been told to design a character in the 2nd game, which isn't in the roster in the 2nd game. However, in order to get the basis of the game, I'll need to research the heroes and what they can do.

Heroes: Who are they, what can they do, how they can do

Heroes are a variety of characters where the player (who operates them mechanically but is not actually in the game), can use to assemble parties and searches to explore dungeons. The Heroes are divided into several classes depending on what skills they offer which enhance their appearance and their ability to fight. As mentioned previously, there are only 9 heroes/classes in the roster in the sequel, instead of the 17. But, the player can still form a team of Heroes and lead an expedition through the dungeon. It's the same process as the first one.

  • Plague Doctor: The Plague Doctor is a researcher and an alchemist. The Plague Doctor is recommended to be placed at the last ranks, 3  & 4,  so, she can support her teammates by giving them HP. However, in order to defend herself the Plague Doctor can also inflict harm towards the enemies such as blindness and toxic potions
  • Grave Robber: One of the most agile Heroes in the game, the Grave Robber utilises a pickaxe as her melee weapon and uses poison darts & daggers for distance attacks if the enemy is far from her. The way her dress is is thin & light, rather than wearing plates of armour, as she prefers agility & mobility over protection.
  • The Highwayman: is a Damage Per Second class and can attack from any position. His attacks are quite effective in killing enemies. Especially with one of his default attacks, the duelist advance, which can kill the enemies if Highwayman is at the front ranks.
  • Man at Arms: is an old Hero who's been through a lot during his previous battles. He's a veteran

My Character Concept

The Blacksmith: This hero class would have very heavy themes of a blacksmith. But he'll cooperate in the battles with the enemies & can upgrade the original heroes' weapons.

Backstory

The Blacksmith, grew up in a poor family & their family did all their best to make enough money to keep alive when he was a child. The Blacksmith's father was also a blacksmith so, the child decided to follow on his footsteps. Many years later, he was working as a blacksmith & one day his left arm got caught in a machine & it was severely injured so, he had to get an amputee. The amputees didn't work for him so, in all of his frustration, anger & running out of patience, he decided to make one on his own using his one functional arm. After a few years of struggle, he managed to make a functional amputee which can grab & hold objects due to it's operational fingers at the end. The method he used to make it possible is unknown. One day, the enemies of the Darkest Dungeon killed their family & The Blacksmith vows to take revenge on them. (WILL DEVELOP SOON)

Abilities

Since the Blacksmith has a functional amputee, I have some ideas on how it can come into handy in melee attacks & such. His amputee is made of metal which can do some considerate amount of damage to the enemies and since my Hero character will be fighting alongside the other Heroes, his amputee can be really useful.

Firstly, I've thought about some boxing moves such as uppercut, haymaker, etc.,. Firstly, the uppercut's a move where you punch someone under the jaw:

Firstly, a stun move called The Uppercut which is based on the original boxing move. The Uppercut can be used to stun enemies, temporarily paralyzing them due to the impact from the punch with the metal amputee. The Uppercut can be used when the Blacksmith is in Rank 1 or 2, and used when the enemies are in Position 1 & 2

Secondly, there's another melee attack called The Haymaker, which is also based on the original boxing move. In boxing, the Haymaker is when a player moves their fist around and punches to the side of an opponent's face. Though it may not seem like a powerful move, however it can do some real damage. My Hero character can do that same attack which can do some considerate damage to the enemies. The Haymaker can be used when the Blacksmith is in Rank 1 or 2 but, can attack when the enemies is in Position 1.

Thirdly, I wanted to add more usage to my Blacksmith Hero character other than battle. So, I decided that the Blacksmith can upgrade the original Heroes' weapons using buffs. The Blacksmith can use the Strength Buff to strengthen weapons & can increase damage to the enemies. The Blacksmith can also use the Blockade Buff, to increase resistance of damage to the weapons & possibly players.

To show what my Blacksmith character could look like in the game, I've gathered some pictures of old-fashioned blacksmith costumes & steampunk-ish robotic arms to envision what he could supposedly look like:

For the materials on the robotic amputee, I wanted to give it a more...rusty & tarnished feel. Rather than gold, silver & shiny. Something like this for example:

Evaluation

In conclusion, my Blacksmith Hero character was a bit rushed as I didn't put more time into focusing it. If I had payed more attention to it, I would've developed my ideas further & I will take that into consideration next time. On the other hand, the idea is a bit of a good one. Firstly, it's a playable Blacksmith character which can upgrade other Heroes' weapons & can do very considerate amount of damage due to it's melee attacks with his metal amputee.

If I were to do this assignment next time, I'll do my best to put more thought & attention when making a new video game character.
